Around 1313, brandy was first made in France. At the time, it was only used as medication and was referred to as the ‘water of life’ by doctors due to its perceived health benefits. Since then, brandy is considered an elegant liquor typically consumed after a meal. Enhancing the enjoyment of this liquor is the vessel containing it. One easily recognizes the unique shape of the brandy glass. This shape is not just a matter of aesthetics, but a carefully designed form enriching the drinking experience. The Shape of the Brandy Glass: Narrow Top and Wide Bottom
The brandy glass hallmark shape is a narrow top and a wide bottom. The rounded base of the brandy glass allows the liquor to aerate and release its complex aromas, which are funneled upwards towards the top. This shape concentrates the bouquet, enabling the drinker to fully savor the spirit’s nuanced scents. In addition, the wide bottomed glass fits comfortably in the palm of the hand warming the brandy, enhancing its aroma and flavor.
The design of the brandy glass is such that it contains exactly the right amount of liquid when positioned horizontally before spilling over. Although most brandy snifters hold around six to eight ounces, usually they are never filled all the way to the top.
Why I Love Drawing the Brandy Glass
I love simplicity, and I love drawing the brandy glass because of its simple elliptical and spherical shapes. The rim and foot of the glass are ellipses, and the rounded bowl is part of a sphere. Rendering the highlights, shadows, and the reflections off the glass is the challenging part. But I like a drawing challenge, and drawing a brandy glass is an enjoyable still life subject.
